Shahriyar (also Shakhriyar) was born to Azerbaijani parents on April 12, 1985, in the Zangilan District of Azerbaijan. His father, Hamid, a former boxer, trained him in boxing and taught him to play chess before he felt a connection with the latter.

When he was seven, Armenian military forces drove away the residents of his hometown. Currently, he resides in Baku, the capital city of Azerbaijan.

Mamedyarov is the middle of three children and grew up with two sisters: Zeinab Mamedyarova (b. October 3, 1983) and Turkan Mamedyarova (b. August 7, 1989). His sisters are chess players and hold the Woman Grandmaster (WGM) titles.

The eldest sister, Zeinab (or Zeynab), is a three-time Azerbaijani Women’s Champion, with her highest-ever FIDE rating of 2384. Now, she focuses on entrepreneurship; she founded Mammadyarovs Chess School.

According to her Facebook profile, she is the director of Sumgait Olympic Sports Complex (2022- present). Formerly, she was a deputy chairman at Sumgayit Municipality (2013-2020).

Shakhriyar’s younger sister, Turkan, is #150 among Azerbaijani chess players and has a FIDE rating of 2217. In 2002, she won a gold medal in the U-14 European Youth Chess Championship, followed by a victory in the 2003 U-20 Azerbaijani Youth Chess Championship.

She won two consecutive Azerbaijani Women’s Chess Championships in 2005 and 2006.
