Before his demise, Koltsov was residing in a luxury resort, The St. Regis Bal Harbour, from where he jumped off the balcony at 12:39 AM, committing apparent suicide. His former team, Salavat Yulaev Ufa, confirmed his death on March 18, 2024.

Following his retirement, Koltsov joined the Belarus-based team Dinamo Minsk of the KHL in 2017 as its assistant coach. He served on the team until November 9, 2018, when he was sacked midway through the 2018-19 season.
