The couple married and moved to Los Angeles later. It was a relationship goal moment-turned-true for Amy and Lino until the latter was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer.
Following his diagnosis, they adopted a daughter, Idalia (an adapted name for Zoela), so that she could be close to Lino’s Sicilian family, who initially disapproved of their marriage as Amy was a black American.
After her husband’s death, Amy and her daughter moved to Sicily, where she developed a bond with her mother-in-law.

In an October 2022 interview with Tudum, Eugenio talked about her deep connection and responsibility to portray Lino (based on Tembe’s late husband Saro), “I felt responsible for carrying the story on my shoulders.”
