What Happened To Arj Barker At Melbourne International Comedy Festival?
Barker sparked controversy and received backlash after he reportedly kicked out a mother and her seven-month-old child from his Melbourne Comedy Festival show at the Athenaeum Theatre on April 20, 2024.
Trish Faranda was in the comedy show with her baby in the show, where her baby “gurgled a bit,” which allegedly was “disrupting his train of thought.” At first, Barker acknowledged the baby and made a few jokes before the baby made a nose again, and he approached her, asking to leave.
Speaking to 3AW Radio, she stated her child was a baby and was breastfeeding her when the comedian Trish asked her to depart, which left her feeling “humiliated.” As reported, 10-12 people (mainly women and mothers) joined her as she walked out of the theater.
It stirred controversy at the theater and later online—some criticized why Faranda took a baby to a 15-plus show, while some supported motherhood.
In response, Barker said, “The show is strictly age 15 plus, as clearly stated on the ticket site. She had an infant with her. The baby was disrupting my performance.” He also admitted feeling bad about that situation and offered her a refund.
